FAQs

Q: Is this program virtual?

A: Yes, all meetings are virtual unless otherwise stated. All times are ET. We have some virtual meetings that are scheduled, some flexible office hours and much of the work can be completed asynchronously.

Q: How long does the program run?

A: The duration of the program depends on your schedule and your timeline. Expect to invest at least 75 hours to complete the program. For example, your project will take approximately 6-8 weeks if you commit 10-15 hours/week (summer program) or could take several months if you work on it a little at a time.

Q: How do I know if this program is right for me?

A: Take our QUIZ to find out, and you can schedule a meeting with Anne. The best meetings are when both the student and a parent can be present to share and ask questions.

Q: What are the research topics that students can choose?

A: We believe students do their best work when they're passionate about their research. That's why we don't assign topics from a list. Instead, we guide students through a process to discover their own research questions based on their interests, talents, and goals.

We work with various subject matter experts and sometimes we will share that one of our experts has an idea for a project or is ready to take on a student. Sometimes that can influence a student’s topic of interest, and that’s ok too.

Here's how it works:

  • Initial Exploration: Your application responses will give us insights into your areas of curiosity.
  • One-on-One Support: We'll have individual meetings to discuss potential directions, refine your focus, and ensure your topic has the right scope for the program.
  • Developing Research Skills: We will share various resources to help you get started, and we support any initiative you take throughout the journey. One important aspect of this work is to help you become an independent, critical thinker who can navigate challenges and ambiguity. You will need patience with yourself as you build knowledge, make observations, look for patterns and connections. The nature of each student’s project is unique!
  • Documentation & Writing: College-level research is a big undertaking for a high schooler. We will help you schedule your research time and set you up with a way to document your progress. You will write about your findings which will culminate in a research paper at the end of this program.

This personalized approach sets our program apart and ensures you'll be invested in your research from day one.

Q: How will we collaborate virtually?

A: We'll use a variety of digital tools to create a dynamic and engaging virtual collaboration experience. Here's what you can expect:

  • Google Classroom: Our primary hub for announcements, resources, discussion boards, and assignment submissions (groups only).
  • Google Meets: For live video sessions, including whole-group discussions in our Cohort Meetings, small group work during Office Hours, and one-on-one consultations with me.
  • Collaborative Tools: We'll use tools like Google Calendar, Google Docs, Slides and Sheets for real-time brainstorming, project planning, and sharing work.
  • Asynchronous Communication: We'll also leverage messaging tools for questions, feedback, and informal interaction outside of scheduled meetings.
  • Beyond specific tools...we'll focus on fostering a supportive and interactive virtual community, where everyone feels comfortable sharing ideas and asking for help.

Q: What is the application process?

A: To apply, simply complete our 30-minute Application Questionnaire . We'll review your responses and schedule a meeting. If this program is a good fit, you will be invited to join the program and get started right away!

Q: How will my research topic be determined?

A: One of the things that makes this program unique is that you'll have substantial control over your research project. It will be based on your interests, your strengths, and the direction that you want to follow. We'll follow a collaborative process to ensure your project aligns with your interests, strengths, and future goals. While choosing your own topic might seem a little daunting at first, it's incredibly empowering!

I'll serve as your guide throughout the process, helping you:

  • Explore your interests: We'll discuss your passions within math, science, and technology to identify potential research areas.
  • Narrow your focus: I'll help you refine those broad areas into a specific, researchable question.
  • Develop a strong foundation: We'll ensure you have the necessary skills and resources to tackle your chosen project.
  • Skills for life: This journey into uncharted territory is an opportunity to develop powerful knowledge-building skills that will serve you well beyond this program.

Q: What is the cost of the program?

A: The cost varies with the level of mentorship needed. The 6-week fast-track summer program begins at $2000. Reserve with 20% deposit.

Q: Are there any financial aid options available?

A: We do not currently have established financial aid options. However, we are actively seeking funding sources and partnerships that would allow us to offer scholarships to students whose families cannot afford the full program cost. If cost is a barrier for your family, please let us know, and we'll keep you updated on any scholarship opportunities that become available. If you are aware of a funding source, please email anne@cultivatingexcellence.org.
